COMPOST TUMBLERS

The City of Nacogdoches' Composting Program is underway.

If you are a resident of the City of Nacogdoches and not currently composting, you may pick up an application to receive a compost tumbler at City Hall (202 East Pilar, Room 320), Public Works (3812 NW Stallings Drive) or at www.ci.nacogdoches.tx.us. Return completed applications to Stacy Corley, Deputy City Secretary/Grant Coordinator at Nacogdoches City Hall, 202 East Pilar, Room 315, Nacogdoches, TX 75961. Compost tumblers will be given out on a first come first serve basis, as the number of tumblers are limited.

City Councilmember Shelley Brophy said, "Composting is good for the environment and keeps unnecessary waste out of the landfill. We are hopeful this pilot program will be a success."

Prior to receiving a compost tumbler you MUST attend one of the compost training classes that will be held at the Nacogdoches Courthouse Annex (202 West Main). Classes will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2010 or Thursday, January 28, 2010. Proof of completion of the composting class is required in order to pick up tumblers at the Public Works office at 3812 NW Stallings Drive.

ARBOR DAY POSTER CONTEST

Lindsey Farrell - Central Heights Elementary School 2008 winning 1st place county-wide poster.

The Texas Forest Service (TFS) sponsors the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Poster Contest in Texas. Each fall a Texas Forester educates participating Nacogdoches County 5th grade students on the importance of trees. The poster contest reflects the lesson and is judged for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner for each school and then for the county. County-wide 1st place winner has his/her art work put on a t-shirt that is then given to the above winners and their teachers.

Nacogdoches Blooms

Beginning in 1998, Nacogdoches Blooms began the mass planting of clusters of jonquils and other heirloom bulbs throughout Nacogdoches.  Through annual planting of donated bulbs the program has grown to more than 750,000 blooms, with the bulbs naturally doubling every year.

Trail development (map of Jonquil trail) began with the assistance of volunteers planting clusters of jonquils and other heirloom bulbs underneath 13 city park signs, in the public gardens around the Convention & Visitors Bureau, Sterne-Hoya Park, and Millards Crossing Historic Village.  Since then clusters of bulbs have been added behind City Hall, the downtown parking lot at the corner of Mound and Main streets, Festival Plaza, the airport, along with several locations around the Loop 224.  Jonquils have also been planted underneath trees in the historic downtown area.

EDUCATION GRANTS

The first annual Education Grants were awarded in May, 2007 to 6 local schools. These schools were awarded $250 - $500 for projects such as a Butterfly Garden, a Weather Station, a Bird Cafeteria and several beautification and anti-litter education projects.

LITTER-FREE FESTIVALS

KNB volunteers work at four downtown festivals each year so that visitors experience a beautiful and litter-free community.

TREE NURSERY

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful sponsors a tree nursery (located at the City landfill) to grow trees for beautification projects throughout the county. Volunteers are needed to maintain the nursery by planting seedlings, weeding and re-potting the trees as they grow.

Urban Forestry

Keep Nacogdoches is pleased to be able to offer this limited addition print of the historic Old North Church Oak Tree. Money raised from the sale of the Ron Wells' Old North Church tree print benefits urban forestry in Nacogdoches county. Price is $59.00 and be purchased through the Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful's Donate/Merchandise Page. The historic post oak once played an important role in the religious life of early Texans, for it was under its spreading branches that the settler secretly met and worshipped.

A storm in 1925 nearly destroyed the tree when almost the entire crown was blown off. It healed and hid its wound with a dense crown of branches and leaves. In September of 2005, Hurricane Rita struck Nacogdoches completely destoying the Old North Church Oak tree.
